1. Introduction
Welcome to North Pottery. Your safety and well-being are our highest priority. This policy outlines key health and safety practices designed to create a safe, creative, and enjoyable environment for all members, course participants, and visitors.
Please read and adhere to these guidelines when using the studio. Your cooperation helps maintain a safe space for everyone.
2. General Studio Safety Guidelines
• Be aware of your surroundings and considerate of others in the space.
• Immediately report hazards, damaged equipment, or spills to studio staff.
• Wear appropriate attire: avoid loose clothing or jewelry, and tie back long hair.
• Closed-toe shoes must be worn at all times.
• Only use equipment you’ve been trained to operate safely.
• Always wash your hands after working with clay, glazes, or tools.
• Keep walkways and exits clear of bags and materials.
3. Safe Use of Pottery Equipment
Pottery Wheels
• Ensure stools are stable and positioned correctly.
• Do not lean heavily on the wheel while in motion.
• Keep hands and tools clear of moving parts.
• Use water sparingly to reduce slip hazards.
• Clean your wheel and area after each use.
Tools and Sharp Objects
• Handle sharp tools with care and intention.
• Do not leave tools unattended on work surfaces.
• Return tools to storage after use.
4. Clay and Glaze Safety
• Some materials may contain silica or other harmful substances—handle with care.
• No food or drink near your workspace.
• Use a dust mask when handling powders or mixing glazes.
• Use studio-provided glazing tools only.
• Dispose of glaze waste in marked containers—never down the sink.
5. Dust Management
Silica dust can be harmful over time. Help reduce airborne particles by:
• Cleaning with damp sponges/mops instead of dry sweeping.
• Avoiding sanding dry clay; if necessary, wear a dust mask.
• Keeping tools and surfaces clean during and after use.
• Regular floor cleaning is performed by staff to maintain low dust levels.
6. Fire Safety Procedures
• Know the locations of all fire exits (clearly marked).
• Fire extinguishers are on site; only use them if trained and it’s safe.
• In case of fire:
1. Raise the alarm.
2. Exit via the nearest fire exit.
3. Leave belongings behind.
4. Gather at the designated assembly point.
• Do not re-enter the building until given clearance.
7. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Aprons: Recommended to protect clothing.
• Dust Masks: Required when working with dry clay or glaze powders.
• Gloves: Use when advised, particularly with specific glazes or chemicals.
8. Accidents and First Aid
• A complete first aid kit is available in the studio.
• All injuries or near misses must be reported to the studio manager immediately.
• Incidents will be recorded in our Accident Log.
• In an emergency, call 999.
9. Cleaning and Studio Hygiene
• Clean your wheel, workspace, and tools after each session.
• Use appropriate sinks for rinsing sponges and tools.
• Leave the studio clean and safe for others.
10. Children and Vulnerable Adults
• Must be supervised at all times.
• Under 18s require written parental consent to participate in activities.
• Take extra care around sharp tools when young participants are present.
11. Studio Code of Conduct
• Treat fellow studio users with respect and kindness.
• Maintain a calm, focused atmosphere—be mindful of noise levels.
• Do not handle others’ work or tools without permission.
